How do RFID door entry systems work?

When you present your key fob or key card (a RFID tag) to the sensor beside the door (a RFID reader), the tag sends the reader its ID code (usually printed on the back of the tag). If this ID code is in the building’s database, the door is unlocked and you can enter the building.

What service does breakright provide?

breakright clones or copies RFID tags by programming blank tags to match the ID code of your tag. Most of the time, breakright can clone your tag from a photo of the ID code. Sometimes, (e.g., if the code is worn or faded) we may need the original tag to create the copy.

Which RFID tags can breakright clone? Is my tag compatible?

breakright can clone most RFID tags used in residential buildings, and some commercial (e.g., office) buildings.

breakright will not clone tags used in financial applications (e.g., student cards, transit passes).

breakright only clones RFID tags – we do not support other radio frequency technologies such as car keys. Most devices with a battery do not use RFID technology.

Am I “allowed” to clone my RFID tag?

RFID tags are no different than regular keys.

Unless otherwise prohibited (e.g., by terms of a lease or rental agreement), you are permitted to create copies of keys you own. brekright is no different than a hardware store that copies regular keys 🔑.

You should not copy keys used in commercial (e.g., office) applications without approval of the relevant authority.

What else should I know?

You should treat your key fob(s) and RFID tag(s) like regular keys. If you are no longer authorized to access the building, you should return or destroy your key fob(s). If your key fob(s) are lost or stolen, you should report them to the relevant authority for deactivation. If the relevant authority deactivates your original key fob(s), all copies will also be deactivated.

Generally,

You tell us the quantity and style of tags you would like to purchase (see below), and we confirm we have your selection in stock.
You send us a picture of your RFID tag with the ID code visible (example) and we determine if breakright can copy your tag. We will also determine whether or not breakright can copy the tag from the photo before delivery, or if the copy must be made in-person from the original tag (e.g., if the ID code is worn or faded).

We suggest meeting at your building to test and deliver the tags before payment. However, we can also arrange to meet elsewhere, for delivery by mail, or for pick-up at our location in the west end of Guelph. breakright will happily refund tags that do not work at purchase, provided you return the tag to us in unchanged condition.
